What’s The Buzz About MSP’s?

October 29th, 2009

There is a lot of buzz going around about a new service called Managed Services Provider. You are probably wondering why you would pay a fixed fee every month to keep your networked systems running. I hear this phrase quite a bit, “Why would I pay you a fixed amount every month when I can keep my costs down by simply calling when something isn’t working!”

My reply to that question is, “Are you really keeping your costs down?” “Are your systems really working or are you headed straight into the path of an oncoming train?” “What will happen if the systems go down during tax season, in the middle of a large law suit or right in the middle of that big deal that you have been working on for the last five years?” What many small business owners don’t take into consideration is the timing of the malfunction and the peripheral costs to their business when the systems do malfunction. I can guarantee that the peripheral cost will surpass the cost of the computer technician, 9 times out of 10.

How can that be??? I’ll tell you there are two major areas that SMB’s (Small and Medium Businesses) don’t take into consideration when calculating the cost of broken computers/servers/networks.

  1. The cost of having their employees sitting idle or working at less than normal efficiencies.
  2. The loss of business due to systems that are down.

Business is a unique animal and it will wait for no one. Moving forward is the nature of the beast. You have to feed the beast or it will never grow.  Why then would the owner of the business take a chance? Because SMB owners are gamblers…they rolled the dice when they went into business and continue to do as they feed and grow their businesses.

I understand this mentality…I am the owner of a business that fits into the SMB mold. What the SMB owners do is take calculated risks. So I ask this question…”As a small business owner, you understand the harsh realities of running a business. You know that your data is important. Computers and networks keep your data just a few clicks away at all times. Why then would you risk losing that data when it is easy and affordable to have a MSP (Managed Service Provider) watching over your computers, servers, securitynetworks and data backups 24/7/365?

Why interrupt the flow of your business if it isn’t necessary? KIT Services offers a full range of services that would make us your virtual IT department for FAR less money than having an IT person in house. The average cost of an IT professional on your staff is going to cost you an average of 65K per year. An MSP agreement will cost you WAY less than 65K per year AND you will have someone that is receiving constant updates as to the health of your computer systems and networks.

Advantages Disadvantages of VOIP

August 25th, 2009

What is the world coming to? Well I can’t really say what the WORLD is coming to but I can tell you that the business world is running towards all facets of Internet Connectivity, faster than you can shake a stick at it.

Businesses are even switching over their telephone systems to be connected to the Internet through something called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol.

So what advantages does VoIP offer? Well, one of the biggest benefits is the cost savings to the end user. Most business users of VoIP will reap a cost savings of 50% or better by switching from traditional phone systems to VoIP. Long distance is free for the continental United States and there is no need to have a metro number.

The disadvantages of VoIP is the initial cost. Full featured PBX systems can get very expensive costing 10’s of thousands of dollars. However, there is a silver lining in the clouds. KIT Services offers a feature rich hosted PBX solution that is extremely reasonable.

VoIP telephony is one of the fastest growing technologies in the communication industry today. New VoIP companies are starting up like crazy! That’s why you need to choose wisely when choosing your VoIP provider.

KIT Services, Inc. is proud to say that we have partnered with one of the leaders in VoIP technology, Vocalocity. Vocalocity helps the end user take the sting out of the costs of implementing VoIP by providing a hosted PBX solution.

Assuming that your business already has a high speed internet connection and a Local Area Network (even a small one), the only hardware you will need to purchase to get your VoIP solution going is IP Telephones!

VoIP technology has come a long way in a VERY short time. No longer will the person you call hear the staccato sound of you cutting in and out.

To test out the clarity of this fantastic technology and the quality of Vocalocity’s product, call KIT Services, Inc. today at 866.670.5487 or fill in our Contact Page. We will work up a quote for you.

Maintain your hardware

August 24th, 2009

Have you ever been driving your vehicle down the road when a warning light illuminates on the instrument panel saying “Check Engine”? What is your initial reaction? Do you panic and take it to the repair shop or do you say “Ah…it’ll be alright.”

Well…your “Check Engine” light may have never come on if you had been taking your vehicle in for regularly scheduled maintenance.

Oh sure, you may get lucky and drive another 5,000 or 10,000 miles before you finally break down. On the other hand, your vehicle may not even start the next morning, leaving you stranded. Then you have to call the repair shop, get a tow truck to take the vehicle to the shop, call your office to let them know what happened and possibly even be put in a position to where you have to call all of your appointments to reschedule.

Business waits for no one or anything else for that matter. Business can be a ruthless monster that devours everything in it’s path whether you want it to or not…so what do most people do? They keep their vehicles running smoothly by taking it in for oil changes and regularly scheduled maintenance.

So why wouldn’t you do the same for your business computers and networking equipment? Computers and other networking equipment are nothing more than machines. Machines need to be maintained. If you ignore a piece of machinery long enough, it will fail.

However, literally millions of businesses continue to ignore the warning signs that their computer equipment sends them. The error messages come and go until one day, your PC simply won’t work anymore. The result is the same as if it would be with your vehicle. You call a repairman, an appointment is scheduled and more times than not, you get your PC back running like a top some week or so later. Following the repair, you also get a repair bill that could be mistaken for a vehicle repair bill.

Have you ever stopped to think about how much that repair actually costs you? There are a few different factors to consider including, loss of productivity for your company, loss of employee productivity, loss or delay in receivables causing cash flow issues, delay in providing your deliverables…I could go on but I think you get the picture.

Of course I have taken a long time to get to the point which is, your computer equipment is machinery just like your vehicle that you drive. You MUST keep it tuned up and running efficiently in order to keep your downtime to a minimum.

Here at KIT Services, Inc., we use an extensive set of tools that allows us to keep tabs on your equipment so that we know when it is time to take the necessary precautions to keep your computer equipment running as smoothly as possible.

Data Security…Where do I start?

July 29th, 2009

Have you ever asked yourself the question “Where do I start?” with regards to securing your business data and network?

Well, it has been said that all things start at the beginning…with regards to data and network security, I believe that all things start at the “Edge.” The “Edge” of the network that is.

Here at KIT Services, we believe that all security should begin at the edge of the network by utilizing a well rounded filtering device that all data coming into or leaving the network must filter through.

This device will filter all data searching for viruses, SPAM, Denial of Service Attacks, Intrusion Attempts, Web Content filtering and also acts as a router and firewall. That’s right…all of these functions and more bundled into one device that sits at the edge of your network.

Why do we put so much emphasis on the “Edge of the network?” The reason being is that the hardest part of a malware creator’s job is to get the malware program by the security defenses and on to a computer. Once they have accomplished this, the hard part is done. Now all that needs to happen is for some poor user to activate the program and the rest is history. Anything can happen after that…SPAM Bots churning out the SPAM, loss of data, poor performing PC’s…you get the idea.

Additionally, KIT Services also believes that the PC should be protected with a respectable program at the desktop and server level, such as Kaspersky.

The reason for having the edge of the network secured as well as the PC is simple. As hard as the defenders against malware work to neutralize its effect, our defenders will always be two steps behind. Defenders against malware can only combat what they see and the malware creators are VERY busy writing programs that circumvent the road blocks that our beloved defenders create.

KIT Services takes the security of your data and network very seriously. We do not believe in rolling the dice just hoping and praying that our clients do not become target.

We believe in being “Proactive” in all of our support ventures.

What is a Managed Service Provider?

July 29th, 2009

Here you are…out on the internet trying to find someone to help you solve your I T problems when you start seeing all of this information about Managed Services.

It seems that the more technologically advanced we become as a society, the more these odd names and acronyms pop up. It seems there are new descriptors and acronyms every day.

Well let me go ahead and quote out of Wikipedia:

“A managed services provider (MSP) is typically an information technology (IT) services provider who manages and assumes responsibility for providing a defined set of services to their clients either proactively or as they (not the client) determine that the services are needed. Most MSPs bill a flat or near-fixed monthly fee, which benefits their clients by providing them with predictable IT support costs.

Many MSPs now provide many of their services remotely over the Internet rather than having to perform on-site client visits, which is time consuming and often expensive. Common services provided by MSPs include remote network, desktop and security monitoring, patch management and remote data back-up, as well as technical assistance.”

So…if your head is still spinning, the simple explanation is that a Managed Services Provider constantly monitors your network, security, PC’s and backups so that you can do what you do best…run your business.

Your business data is the most important part of your operation. Consider this…how devastating would it be to your business should you suffer a catastrophic event? How long would it take you to recover your data and get your employees producing and adding to the top line again? How long would it take you to simply get your business operational again on the most basic level? Finally, how much do you think it would cost your business to recover?

When considering the cost, you can’t just count the money you spend on IT to recover. The costs go much deeper than that. You may have a loss of revenue. You will definitely suffer the cost of continuing to pay your employees while they are not producing for the company. What about the loss of receivables from your customers?

The bottom line is this. Most of today’s businesses not only have internal networks but are also connected to the internet. Internal networks and being connected to the internet leaves your precious data exposed to dangers that I am sure you do not want to be exposed to.

So, whether you choose KIT Services, Inc. to protect you or not…all serious business owners and managers should enter into a partnership with an MSP.

Sincerely,

Jeff Kelley
