Data Security…Where do I start?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Have you ever asked yourself the question “Where do I start?” with regards to securing your business data and network?

Well, it has been said that all things start at the beginning…with regards to data and network security, I believe that all things start at the “Edge.” The “Edge” of the network that is.

Here at KIT Services, we believe that all security should begin at the edge of the network by utilizing a well rounded filtering device that all data coming into or leaving the network must filter through.

This device will filter all data searching for viruses, SPAM, Denial of Service Attacks, Intrusion Attempts, Web Content filtering and also acts as a router and firewall. That’s right…all of these functions and more bundled into one device that sits at the edge of your network.

Why do we put so much emphasis on the “Edge of the network?” The reason being is that the hardest part of a malware creator’s job is to get the malware program by the security defenses and on to a computer. Once they have accomplished this, the hard part is done. Now all that needs to happen is for some poor user to activate the program and the rest is history. Anything can happen after that…SPAM Bots churning out the SPAM, loss of data, poor performing PC’s…you get the idea.

Additionally, KIT Services also believes that the PC should be protected with a respectable program at the desktop and server level, such as Kaspersky.

The reason for having the edge of the network secured as well as the PC is simple. As hard as the defenders against malware work to neutralize its effect, our defenders will always be two steps behind. Defenders against malware can only combat what they see and the malware creators are VERY busy writing programs that circumvent the road blocks that our beloved defenders create.

KIT Services takes the security of your data and network very seriously. We do not believe in rolling the dice just hoping and praying that our clients do not become target.

We believe in being “Proactive” in all of our support ventures.

What is a Managed Service Provider?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Here you are…out on the internet trying to find someone to help you solve your I T problems when you start seeing all of this information about Managed Services.

It seems that the more technologically advanced we become as a society, the more these odd names and acronyms pop up. It seems there are new descriptors and acronyms every day.

Well let me go ahead and quote out of Wikipedia:

“A managed services provider (MSP) is typically an information technology (IT) services provider who manages and assumes responsibility for providing a defined set of services to their clients either proactively or as they (not the client) determine that the services are needed. Most MSPs bill a flat or near-fixed monthly fee, which benefits their clients by providing them with predictable IT support costs.

Many MSPs now provide many of their services remotely over the Internet rather than having to perform on-site client visits, which is time consuming and often expensive. Common services provided by MSPs include remote network, desktop and security monitoring, patch management and remote data back-up, as well as technical assistance.”

So…if your head is still spinning, the simple explanation is that a Managed Services Provider constantly monitors your network, security, PC’s and backups so that you can do what you do best…run your business.

Your business data is the most important part of your operation. Consider this…how devastating would it be to your business should you suffer a catastrophic event? How long would it take you to recover your data and get your employees producing and adding to the top line again? How long would it take you to simply get your business operational again on the most basic level? Finally, how much do you think it would cost your business to recover?

When considering the cost, you can’t just count the money you spend on IT to recover. The costs go much deeper than that. You may have a loss of revenue. You will definitely suffer the cost of continuing to pay your employees while they are not producing for the company. What about the loss of receivables from your customers?

The bottom line is this. Most of today’s businesses not only have internal networks but are also connected to the internet. Internal networks and being connected to the internet leaves your precious data exposed to dangers that I am sure you do not want to be exposed to.

So, whether you choose KIT Services, Inc. to protect you or not…all serious business owners and managers should enter into a partnership with an MSP.

Sincerely,
